Stories about craft, food and cities

Between 2013 and 2018 I wrote regularly for brands and magazines that care about how things are made, among them Manufactum and BLONDE. Reporting, interviews and features where the people and the place carry the story.

Magazine spread: a bar manager mixing a drink with monastery liqueur

Manufactum, Gutes aus Klöstern, 2018

Die überraschende Mixologie der Kloster-Liköre

On a winter morning in Berlin-Charlottenburg, two people who usually work nights set their alarms early: the owner and the bar manager of the jazz bar The Hat. Their task was to take herbal liqueurs from monasteries, long seen as dusty, and give them the lead in new cocktails. The piece ends with six recipes to mix at home.

Magazine opening spread titled Aus eigener Craft

BLONDE magazine, Freunde & Affären

Aus eigener Craft

Why a generation that could work in media chooses craft instead. Portraits of Berlin founders: two women who built a business on dried flowers, a couple distilling vodka from Berlin water in Kreuzberg, and two sisters running an online magazine for German-speaking craft and design.

Magazine spread with a Buenos Aires street scene

Travel feature, four pages in print

Buenos Aires, a love-hate story

A personal guide to a city I kept coming back to: Palermo's cafés and designers, San Telmo's market, and the bars where pensioners play cards in the early evening and young people dance tango after midnight. With a full list of places to eat, drink and dance.

What it taught me

Every subject has a person who can make it come alive.

A cocktail recipe, a dried-flower business, a city: the story always worked once I found the person at its centre. It is the same habit I bring to compliance, energy policy and development funding today.
